Mission: September 1 A new Beginning

Jennifer received a note at dinner on Friday evening. The first challenge would begin on the following morning, being Halloween. She was to arrive at the garden behind the castle at promptly 9 AM.

At two minutes to nine, she showed up, afraid to be late.

Barny arrived almost at the same time, He'd been up for a while now, though he'd started later than usual, he'd only done one lap around the castle this morning so as not to get tired, a warm-up really, and a light breakfast as well, so as not to weigh him down. He was more than a little nervous. He was happy to see Jen, but disturbed not to see Reg. He hoped that Reg wasn't sleeping in. "Hi, Jen. Any idea of where Reg is hiding?"

"No. I haven't seen him much of late," she said. "He's been preoccupied of late."

Reg ran up to the group and stopped. He seemed out of breath and sweaty. He held up an index finger, as if telling them to hold on, and bent over slightly. He was trying to catch his breath from all that running. Reg then stood up and let out a cough. "Sorry... I was stu-." He stopped mid sentence and ran his hand though his hair. "I was busy.. Did I miss anything?"

"Almost..." said Barny with a note of concern.

MacAulay waited for the clock to chime the hour and the team to come to where she waited.

"Welcome. Your first challenge is to get through the chamber and return here. You will find a portkey in the garden that will take you to the beginning of the first part of this challenge. You must work together to complete the first task. Once completed, you will find your way to the second part of the challenge. If you survive, you will need to find your way to where the portkey awaits. The three of you must touch the portkey simultaneously to return to the garden and end the challenge. Points will be awarded for time, ingenuity, unity and sportsmanship. The time begins when you touch the portkey. Good luck."

Jennifer waited for the signal to start and ran into the garden, searching for anything that could be a portkey. She found an old can, a banana peel, a rotten piece of fruit and an old boot. The boot drew her attention and she ran over to it. "Over here," she called to the other two.

She picked up the boot and held it out for the others.

With a pop the three appeared in a small room. There were four doorways. One had a lion with the head of a man, one a lion with the head of an eagle one a lion with the head of a woman and the last a lion with the head of a dog. All four seemed to stare at the champions.

"Uh, hi?" she asked, not sure what to do with them. With her luck, one or all of them would attack. She gripped her wand tightly and looked for anything that would tell her what they had to do.

"Andro, Gyno, and Heiraco I recognize, The dog one I've never heard of... Gynosphinxes love riddles, The Andro and Heiraco like to fight... Old mythology. Not sure if it's true, it's muggle lore." whispered Barny.

"But it's worth a shot," Jen whispered back. She walked over to the Gynosphinx. "Hello. Do you have a riddle for us?"

The Gynosphinx looked at the three champions. "If you wish to pass by me, you first must answer riddles three."

"Three riddles?" Jen looked at Barny and Reg. "Okay. What's your first riddle?"

I'm a strange contradiction; I'm new, and I'm old,
I'm often in tatters, and oft decked with gold.
Though I never could read, yet lettered I'm found;
Though blind, I enlighten; though loose, I am bound,
I'm always in black, and I'm always in white;
I'm grave and I'm gay, I am heavy and light-
In form too I differ - I'm thick and I'm thin,
I've no flesh and bones, yet I'm covered with skin;
I've more points than the compass, more stops than the flute;
I sing without voice, without speaking confute.
I'm English, I'm German, I'm French, and I'm Dutch;
Some love me too fondly, some slight me too much;
I often die soon, though I sometimes live ages,
And no monarch alive has so many pages.

Jennifer quickly wrote down the riddle, asking the creature to repeat it so she didn't make any mistakes. When she was satisfied, she turned to the others. "Could it be a book? What do you think it means?"

The Gynosphinx nodded slowly. "It is indeed a book. That is one correct. Now for riddle 2:

Round she is, yet flat as a board
Altar of the Lupine Lords.
Jewel on black velvet, pearl in the sea
Unchanged but e'er changing, eternally.

"I know that one. It's the moon," Jen said, confident in her answer.

"That, too, is correct. One more riddle and you may pass." He sat taller and intoned the final riddle. "A dragons tooth in a mortals hand, I kill, I maim, I divide the land."

Jen looked at the other two. "I answered the first two. One of you take a crack at this one."

"A sword?" said Barny, ready to to be attacked and regretting answering off the top of his head.

Reg stood there watching. He wasn't all that good with riddles and he loved watching Jen work. He just tucked his hands in his pockets and stood there. If anything, the riddles confused him a bit more, but the last one seemed to make sense to him. "That sounds right... So... it should be right. Shouldn't it?" He looked over to Jen and shrugged.

"Correct," the Gynosphinx announced. She stepped out of the door so they could enter.

Reg smiled as he hit Barny on his shoulder and put his arm around Jen. "Great job, guys. Lets hope they are all this easy."
