Mission: September 1 A new Beginning
Location: Headmaster's Office
Timeline: After 3rd Challenge

Alantra followed her father through varying hallways, until he approached the head master's office.

"This place. It is so..." Alantra couldn't find the English word.

Her father smiled. "Magical. Yes. You'll get used to that."

She nodded, as he knocked at the staircase. "Professor Heartseed?" He asked, loudly.

Silence for a moment, then the Gargoyle stepped to the side, saying "Go on up."

The girl quietly followed her father up the stairs. She eyed the office filled with strange, and amazing things. "Ohhh." She whispered. "Strange cool stuff."

Johnathan and Maggie were talking in hushed tones, Magic apparatus covering his desk, they quieted as the pair reached the office.

Maggie turned to the two newcomers. "Hello there. What brings you to Hogwarts?"

"My daughter wishes to transfer. The schools of North America have failed to impress her, and I spend more time here in Britain." Her father said, gruffly. "Alantra, say hello."

"Uhm. Hi." Alantra said, nodding.

Heartseed smiled, "Happy to have you. A Seagull from Salem already arrived with word of it."

"That's odd. Alantra hadn't even made up her mind yet." Mr. MacDonald noted.

"Actually, I kind of had. I've seen photos, you know." Alantra said, smiling.

"Yes, the sorting hats are kind of funny that way, any chance they have to gossip with one another..." Heartseed said amusedly.

"Right. Well. I expect there's paperwork we have to sort out, and what have you." Alantra's father noted with a smile.

Alantra rolled her eyes. Bureaucrats and paperwork.

"Oh dear, I hope not, horrible thing, paperwork, it's like homework for adults. Simply shouldn't be any, please sir, don't try to scare your poor child." Johnathan said in mock horror.

"Which child, the girl or the Headmaster?" Maggie asked mockingly.

Jonathan gave her a deer in the headlights look, then a grin, "both?"

Maggie just shook her head and tried not to smile back. "Now, although she's already been in school, she needs to be sorted into a house here." She glanced at the girl and pulled out a chair. "If you will be so kind as to take a seat, we'll see to that immediately."

"Uhm. Alright." Alantra said, uncomfortably shifting. "Does it hurt?"

Proffesor Heartseed looked surprised at the question qnd turned to a raggedy old hat sitting crookedly atop a globe whose continents bore little resemblance to the ones on earth, "It's never really complained about it, but I've never actually thought to ask. How's about it? Does it hurt you to do a sorting?"

Alantra eyed the professor, then the hat.

"Well, it's nice to know that at least you care, you're the first one to ever ask. No, it doesn't hurt, but could you maybe make sure that they wash their hair before they put me on? Some of them smell really bad!" exclaimed the hat.

Alantra wasn't entirely sure how to respond to a talking hat. She opened her eyes widely. "Oh. Well. I do bathe rather oft-"

Jonathan nodded and walked up to the new student, took her head in both hands, and before anyone could stop him, inhaled deeply. "Is strawberry alright?"

"Oh, yes, just so long as it isn't lavender, I hate the smell of that, it makes me sneeze!" said the hat.

"I think you're both balmy," Maggie said to the headmaster and the sorting hat.

"Uhm. Balmy." Alantra said, with a scowl. "Good way to express that. Do you mind? It took half an hour to get my hair to stay in place without hairspray."

"No, I don't mind at all, actually. Besides, if you spend too much time worrying about your hair, you'll miss some of the more important things." Heartseed said with a wink.

Maggie put the sorting hat on Alantra's head, forestalling further conversation.

"Hmm, heart and brains, a little sneaky... Not Gryffindor or Ravenclaw..." The sorting hat paused dramatically. "Hufflepuff!" it announced loudly.

"Thank you," Maggie told the hat as she removed it from Alantra's head. "Another wise choice."

"What did he say? About Gryffin doors, Raven Claws and... Huffing puffs? What does that even mean?" Alantra asked, completely confused.

"Hogwarts students are divided into four houses. Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. While all students share similar traits, each house is known for one quality above the others. Gryffindor is courage, Ravenclaw is intelligence, Hufflepuff is heart and Slytherin is cunning."

"I suppose that's a compliment, then." Alantra said, quietly.

"Of course," Maggie assured her. "Every house has its strengths. It's the four houses working together that makes Hogwarts the school it is."

"That sounds lovely." Alantra said, with a thoughtful look. "I doubt it ever works that way, though."

"Not always, but often," Maggie assured her.

"Bah, when they work together, it is when they are at their best, and when they work against one another, they make themselves even stronger!" Smiled Johnathan.

"Now that you're sorted out, your father should take you to Hogsmeade for dinner. You will receive an owl before the start of the new year with instructions," Maggie said. "Is there anything else you need right now?"

"Don't think so." Alantra said, looking up at her father. "Papa?"

"Yes, dear girl. Let's go. They've got some really lovely dishes, that you'll not find, anywhere near home." Her father said, with a smile.
