What Happened When the Lights Went Out? (part 1)

Posted on Tuesday, 31st of March, 2015 @ 1:42am by Professor Margaret (Maggie) MacAulay & Seventh Year Prefect (G) Jennifer Collins & Fourth Year (G) Satele Dragomir & Second Year (G) Robin Maxwell & Fourth Year (R) Allison "Allie" Summers & Fifth Year (S) Alessandra Morgensen & Seventh Year Prefect (S) Reginald Price & Third Year (S) Virgil Constantine

Mission: Another School Year, Another ...
Location: Great Hall

"Lumos!" Jennifer wasn't sure what made the magic in the Great Hall fail, but figured it was worth a shot. However, like before, nothing happened. Even the Professors were at a loss for what to do.

"Stay calm and follow the Prefects back to the dormitories," MacAulay announced.

"Yes, but will the passwords work?" a student asked.

It was a good question. "The paintings and ghosts will be unaffected. Go to your dormitories and wait for morning. We'll meet back here at breakfast. By then we should have a good idea of what is going on," Maggie continued.

Jennifer stood and put a hand on Reg's shoulder. "Professor MacAulay, can Reg and I stay and help?"

Maggie paused for a moment and nodded. "Yes. We can definitely use your talents."

Reg placed his hand on Jennifer's, the one that she put on his shoulder, and squeezed it slightly. "Joy." He replied with no enthusiasm. He wasn't accustomed to putting his foot forward and offering his help, but lucky for him he was with a girl who was well known for raising her hand and putting herself in the proverbial spotlight. "We'll do what we can." Reg said to the Professor. "Can't promise anything." He added under his breath as he looked around a bit.

"No, but we'll do what we can," Jen whispered back.

Satele just stood where she was for a few moments as her eyes started to adjust to the reduced light. She still couldn't see very much, but it was enough to know where she was going. Hearing Jennifer behind her, She made her way towards where her voice had come from, "I'd like to help too if you'll allow me"

"There's going to be plenty of trouble getting to the dormitories and keeping everyone calm. For tonight, I need you there. In the morning, we'll need more help."

Satele nodded, "I understand. You'll know where to find me" she said before starting to make her way to the Gryfindor dorms

Reg looked over to Jennifer and whispered slightly. "Who was that?"

"Satele Dragomir, Gryffindor," she whispered back.

Jennifer nodded. "And a fine student, too."

Virgil stood silently in the dark. It was his home. He was the most comfortable in the dark. His eyes adjusted quickly and soon he was able to see as better as anyone. He didn't need magic, it was in his blood. This is what his kind was known for, lurking in the darkness.

As he slowly popped a new mini blood flavored lolipop in his mouth he took a few seconds to look around. Quickly, and silently, he moved in between the crowd undetected and locked his eyes on his prey. For the moment, his prey was Alessandra.

When he approached Alessandra he placed his hand over his mouth and pulled her into the darkest of corners and whispered quickly into her ear. "Scream and you will ruin fun." He said almost sinister, adding a bit soft and short dark laugh under his breath.

Alessandra pressed herself up against Virgil. "Mmmmm....just what did you have in mind?"

"Shut up." Virgil whispered darkly into her ear. "Maybe you will learn something."

TAG Alessandra

Allie helped calm down the first years she was tutoring and then followed the prefects to the dormitory. "Will the doorway still work?" one of the first years asked her.

Allie looked at him and smiled. "Of course it will." In truth, she had no idea. They did not have a portrait like Gryffindor, but rather a brass knocker that required a question to be answered. If it wasn't working, how would they get in?

Fiona raised her voice. "All Ravenclaws, please come with me." She continued to speak as she made her way to the wall and then around to the main doors. "We'll line up here and then head to the Ravenclaw area and see if the knocker still works."

The Prefects quickly followed suit, each announcing hteir house and calling the students to line up.

One by one, they left the Great Hall to find their way back to their rooms.

The stairs, fortunately, allowed the students to get to Gryffindor tower. When they arrived, the Fat Lady was frantic.

"I can't open the door. Some little girl is in there crying and I can't open the door to let her out!" she wailed. "What's happening?"

"I'm not entirely sure, but we need to get everyone into the dorm. Is there another way in?" Satele asked

"You can use a broom," the Fat Lady replied. "And fly into the tower, but there's something terribly wrong and if I'm trapped here, what would happen if you tried to fly?"

Satele nodded, "Agreed, with everyone's Magic on the fritz, I don't think trying a broom is a good idea. That being said, do you think that we could force the entrance open?"

Maxwell moved forward and took out a pocket knife. "Back home we have a door that is not framed right; it bowed over time and the door is used so rarely we never got it fixed." He put the knife in the lower corner of the portrait opposite the usual hinges and bowed the corner of it out and got his fingers under it to hear the scraping of wood on rock as Maxwell tried to get it open. "A little help... people... not a one guy job..." HE grunted as he held it slightly bowed frame but starting to open it.

Quickly moving to help, Satele grabbed hold of one side of the frame and started to pull. The frame bowed a little more, but not enough to open.

"Aaaaa!" the Fat Lady screamed. "What are you doing to me! You're scratching my frame! I've been violated!"

Fiona headed for the stairs to go to Ravenclaw tower, but stopped, consternated. The stairs were in the wrong place. "We can't get there," she said. "Not this way, anyway. Looks like we're sleeping in the Great Hall."

Keesha followed the Prefects to the opening to Huffelpuff, but the entrance was gone. "Now what?" she asked, looking around. "I don't want to sleep in the Great Hall again. Where else can we go?"

Her stomach rumbled and she giggled. "Maybe we can get into the kitchens? Don't the House Elves have their own magic?"

"I believe they do, but what if all magic in the castle is out of whack, what could affect us could be a pain to them too." Kairi said as she turned her Feather stone over in her hands. It's enchantment was not working, that was the first sign to Kairi that something was wrong, she didn't even dare to touch her heart Keeper. If the enchantment on that was not working or broken then she would lose everything inside it as soon as it was opened. "If we cannot get into the rooms we may have to just wait this out, I'm sure a lot of people will be crowding the Great Hall for sleeping space soon, so we may need to find another spot. I'm happy to sleep under the stars but the Kitchens may need to be a choice here. At least I know how to do some 'muggle' style cooking, if all else fails I can make a 'midnight snack'?"

Lotus Blossom was scared' her glow was not as radiant in her wings ; she felt tired more than she should and her wings could not lift her. She had crashed onto a table in a hallway, knocking some things aside and it hurt to her. She noticed her Wings were not catching the light as they normally did and they managed to give her a controlled crash. She had to move quickly along the table and with a lot of effort she could jump off the table and the fluttering of her wings to land as though it is a much shorter jump.

It was the smell in the air, she heard the low growl before she saw the thing; she turned and saw the Feline. "Don't eat the Fairy!" She screamed as she was not going as fast as she should but She made her little legs move faster. "Somehow!... I am not Meox mix!" She ducked under a counter with the cat on her heels, her wings were fluttering and while not flying it was a controlled float forward with some speed.

The growl of the cat as it was larger than the area the Fairy had gone under, the cupboard with the pots was dark but allowed Lotus to duck around for some cover. The cat was trying just get at the prey so the pots were making a racket as the cat barrelled throughout the cupboards did not have time as she came to the end, on her rump and slightly sliding she kicked the wall, as it was hinged it moved enough for her to slip out.

Lotus Blossom began to run again; no matter how much it made her tired she used that extra power as she was jumping in an effort to fly only to find a longer jumps. Looking back as the pans pushed out the door open with a bang, the cat leaping out. Lotus used the jumps; leaps or whatever they want to call it Lotus was getting closer to the steps downward. It was that Hufflepuff place, but farther from that dang cat. Lotus took the ;quite literally, leap off the top step taking a controlled fall as far as these wings would carry her, arms and legs flailing forward for extra distance.

"H-E-L-P-M-E-E-E-e..." Lotus screamed as she drifted quickly down the stairs making half the height in an arc towards the bottom step.

There was a warble that came from the inside of the Common room of Hufflepuff. Maya, Kairi's loyal Kingfisher had been trying to find her. He flew through into the hallway hearing the screech of one of the 'cat' things'. As Maya skimmed over the shoulder of one of the students he realised that it was Kairi, Maya lifted a wing to turn and see what was going on only to see the 'cat thing' chasing something. It looked like Maya's little 'tag partner', but she wasn't flying and that 'cat thing' was bearing down on her. Maya went into a dive, lowering his beak to show he meant business. He swooped over, lifting his head at the last minute and slamming into the 'cat thing'. It seemed rather startled and bolted in the opposite direction, Maya stretched out his legs and landed swiftly, bouncing around looking for what the 'cat thing' was chasing.

To Lotus Blossom's amazement she had cleared the steps and as she was coming into the ground she realized her wings were not flaring as they should and she was not getting the resistance to this gravity thing; she tried to back pedal as her legs hit the ground and she felt the pop; or crack, of her left ankle as she could do nothing but roughly fold into the hard surface of the ground, Pain shot through her legs as they scraped along the first tumble that was like being thrown like a rock skipping not upon water but stone walkway. Her arms instinctively reached out for something to grab to stop her tumble only to catch air with her left hand and the right palmed the ground as she pivot over the writs that hyper extended and another pop or something and the tip of her wing seemed to fold rather than stay straight in the second rotation . SHe was slowing down in the third tumble that scraped her left side and she felt the thing called road rash forming when the soft cloth of her dress was not proper protection for her speed and sliding in between tumbles. Her forehead hit the ground and she saw stars and mercifully the tumble was an open body not resisting gravity anymore.

The world was encased in bright flashs and pain rippled through her as the breath was no longer easy to bring in with the slap of her stopping with her back into the side of the wall and then her face planted on the stone floor, her arms had moved to protect her head as it hurt just before she fell finally to the ground.

She was not able to get her eyes to focus, she felt pain and warmth all over her body it seemed, so she lay there hoping it would go away.

Maya saw the poor little friend slam into what Kairi called a 'wall' and it did not look all that soft. Maya came over and lifted his wings over her to shield the poor little Blossom. He looked back and warbled trying to get Kairi's attention. "The blossom of the Lotus is hurt!"

"Maya? what's the matter?" Kairi called out.

Maya's head turned. "I don't know what she's whistling about? Why isn't she whistling like usual?" Maya called out more and more trying to show enough urgency that Kairi would come over to look at the little Blossom.

"T-t-tag...? " She could see better with her right eye than her left before her struggle to rise failed with her arms stinging and then giving out.

Kairi scooted over, Maya was going nuts and without the stone to help her she was at a loss other than reading the bird's actions.

"Y-you - win-Maya... I.. sleepy." She rested her head on her good arm.

"Little blossom...." Maya warbled sadly, looking up to Kairi and hopping about as though her was resting on hot coals. Kairi knelt down beside her Kingfisher friend, a gentle hand to his back told the bird that he could fold his wings away. There underneath the 'shielding was the little chocolate loving fairy. "Oh! Lotus Blossom....what happened to you..."

Lotus Blossom could not open her eyes fully, she wanted to cry as something loomed over her; the Growly thing must have her, she covered her face with her arms in an attempt to protect herself. Her wing hurt; her body ached and her left eye was not opening. She cried out for someone to help her and not for the growly thing to eat her. She felt her body tremble as she looked; trying to be brave, into the brown eyes looking back at her and the long hair of a ... Maya's Person? She strained to get a look and when the not fully focused face was not a growly she smiled and closed her eyes as she might be safe; this is the one who actually gave her chocolate, she was able to sleep for a bit and not be eaten.

Maya stayed close, almost hovering over his little friend. Kairi scooped up the poor fairy, getting a better look at her. "One bad wing, looks like a bad foot as well. Wow have you ever been through the wars! you can stay with me for a bit, I just hope we can get into the dormitories, otherwise I know one other person that can help." Kairi placed Lotus in the inside pocket of her robes, on top of her clean handkerchief. "You can sleep there. you're safe." She said quietly, offering up her hand to Maya. "I hope this magic problem can be fixed soon, I miss being able to talk to you."

OOC: Hufflepuff and Slytherin can get to their respective areas. Neither will be able to get into their rooms as the entry will be not work. Hufflepuffs, feel free to sleep in the kitchens with teh house elves.
Gryffindor will be able to open the portrait, with a bit of effort. The Fat Lady can't open it for you.
Ravenclaw, it's a tossup. There is no longer a need for a password. Your call if you get in or not.

OOC: I don't get it. Wouldn't the ghosts and paintings be effected. They are supposed to be around due to magic and if all the magic is out they would be the ones most affected by it.
OOC: Ghosts are not magical creatures. They live in both the magical and muggle worlds.
Paintings, because of the process they go through, will still live. Although they won't be able to leave their paintings or, in the case of the Fat Lady, open the door to the Gryffindor common room.
OOC: I dont agree with this. According to the Hogwarts Wiki, which has already been approved for reference material on the sim

Portraits are paintings made of certain individuals, namely witches and warlocks.

The subject of a magical portrait is sentient due to enchantments placed on the portrait by the painter. The portrait will be able to use some of the subject's favourite phrases and imitate their general demeanour based on how the subject appears to the painter; however, they are limited in what they can say or do.

If enchantments are magical, and during this mission all magic is null in void and no longer work, than the enchantments in the painting are also not working, trapping the painting in its original still form.

This time it's not a complete magical blackout. So the paintings work. We may find some magic not working properly as well. But most magic isn't working.
