POWER OUTAGE! ; Or What to Do When Your Wand Stops Working?
Location: Ravenclaw Tower
Millie ushered everyone back into Ravenclaw Tower. Luckily there was only a few of them there, the majority of the house was elsewhere since it was dinner that the magic went out. She took off her cloak and threw it on one of the nearby sofa's.
"Ok. It seems as if we're trapped up here" she said looking around. "As prefect and your Quidditch Captain I believe we need to do something to find a way to contact the rest of the school" she explained. You could tell in her voice that she was nervous. "Its safe to assume that magic is out of the question, therefore from now on no one is to use any type of magic!" Millie ordered.
"What do we do?" a first year cried. It was obvious that she was very nervous and scared. Millie approached the young girl and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't worry. We're Ravenclaws, if anyone can work this out we can" She said. The Ravenclaw Common Room was a large circular room decorated with blue and gold silk and large bookcases below a domes ceiling painted with stars. "Ok. Everyone start looking through books, see if there is anything in them regarding Hogwarts losing its magic, or anything that might cause this" Millie said.
Craig tapped Millie on the shoulder and took her to one side.
"Millie" He said quietly. "If the staircase is gone and magic isn't working what are we to do for food and fresh water? Also, we're going to need heat" he said nodding over at the now empty fireplace.
"You're right. But don't panic, I'm sure someone will help us. We can at least try to find out whats happening first" Millie replied with a small smile.
Millie wandered over to the fireplace. Usually it would be burning magically away keeping the room at a comfortable temperature. Magic fireplaces often used specially casted fires to ensure that the room was never too cold and never too hot. However now it sat empty and cold.
"I'm going to try and light the fire again. It heats the entire tower" Millie explained to the room. "Hopefully we can get all the rooms heated too, thats if the old heating system still works with good old fashioned fire".
She took out her wand, stopped herself from waving it and then slid it back into her pocket.
"Yeah. I'm not risking blowing half the tower away..." she said. "Someone find me some wood, looks like I'll be rubbing stick together for a while".
"Good idea," Trixie said. "There's no wood here, Millie. It's a dorm. Why don't we just use our blanket to keep warm until morning? Surely the professors will find a way to save us by then."
"The only books we have are schoolbooks. Anything on the history of the castle is in the library," Tara, Trixie's twin sister, added.
A first year looked at his library book: it was a detailed history of Hogwarts. Hogwarts: A History was very good, but it didn't cover everything. His book was the second in a series of 12 that spanned across the entire history of the school, from the founding to the 1950s, when the books were written. He was currently in the twelfth century, but the years were unspecified. He opened the book and began to read, searching for anything that may have had to do with a "power outage".
The knocker outside the Ravenclaw common room banged loudly. Someone was outside.
"Someone's outside" Craig said.
"Oh please let it NOT be peeves!" Millie said as she and Craig started to pull the large door open.
Fiona knocked again. "Hi inside!"
Allie called, "Can you open the door for us?" To Fiona she asked, "Can the door be opened from the inside if the knocker doesn't work?"
"Afraid not," Fiona replied. "Otherwise, they'd have come out by now. We might just have to wait until morning. If the professors don't figure something out, we may have to help them make a bedsheet rope and climb out the window."
It was indeed morning when the lights came on and the knocker gave a happy thump. Fiona grinned happily. "What's the question?" she asked. When the question was given and answered, the door opened. "Finally," she said, walking into the common area. "Come out, come out, wherever you are!"
